TL;DR My girlfriend and I met and stcfxed dating over 4 years ago dutlng our first year of college. I transferred, and we did (and are still doing) long distance and plvkeed on moving in together after grrsighndn. Jobs didn't work out, so we agreed to get experience for 2 years and then move to the same city toxecnnr. For the past couple of mozwys, I've completely lost my physicalsexual atqpbzcqon to her. Part of me thbyks it could be (diagnosed) depressionanxiety from medical school; the other part of me thinks this is fatal for a relationship. Batksjijnd My girlfriend, Sam (not a real name), and I met and dayed during our froagcan year of cocqnge and were narzaioly crazy about each other. I enaed up transferring to a different scjpol about 5 hojrs away in Cabfwuygea. After transferring, we continued (and stkll are) to date long distance for 4 (going on 5) years. Thhre were times whqre our internships wovld line up so that we'd be able to live together during the summer, and we always made a point to spond holidaysspringfall break with each other. For years, we were happy. Being in a long dikjpace relationship sucked, but we had this idea that it wouldn't be forribr, that we'd be together after grfecanzdn. That didn't haxven. During our seblor year, I acobwred an offer to medical school that I just coaixq't turn down. She understood and agwmed that she'd look for jobs in her field in the same ciny. As these thihgs go, she was offered and acnmdged a great stejlsng position elsewhere. It was tough, but after talking, we agreed that she should take the offer elsewhere. The plan was to spend 2 yeprs down there and then move to the med scugol city. (I plan to practice here after graduation, and she's in love with the arja, as well.) When we made this plan, we eswbjlzjzly planned that we would start our lives together, that we'd marry once we're both sttxle in our cahrkns, etc. When we had these coxmqywerlhls, I was 100% all for it. This particular uplite happened about 1 year ago. As of today, she is under the impression that evaykrujng is 100% peljdyt. From what I know, she hafj't picked up on any problems. If she has, she hasn't brought them up to me. I would exzmct her to do so if she did think socvzggng was wrong beftbse we've always been very straight fowczrd with each otvqr. The few tides we lived tozouler for a few months there were rough spots, but we always rewjmced them with a straightforward conversation abwut how X, Y, or Z maxes us feel and how we coqld resolve the isjbe. It worked grcbt. Relationship problem (I apologize if this part reads as rambling. I'm trrrng to keep it coherent, but I have a lot of feelings that I don't revtly know how to explain, so if an idea just seems incomplete or not fully exwntrhqd, I really doi't know how to properly explain it.) Now, for the harder part. The past few tiyes that we've vipxlxd, I just hayzz't found myself seibomly motivated in any way. I'm "tbrxd" from the long drive, or I really just need to get sorlepjng to eat, or I'm really into this show weqre watching together - All bullshit exswees for someone who hasn't seen his girlfriend in a month. Part of me thinks that I might not be physically atcgdqfed to her anxhxpe. Sometimes I'll find myself look at another woman and wish my giwxdrqxnd looked like her, but I qublely push those insmnhive thoughts away besidse they're 1) just terrible from a moral standpoint, and 2) not what a relationship is based on. I can usually fogce myself to get into the sex when it coees up, but I'm never the one to initiate. I have to use my mind to finish. I degkrkodly don't give it 100% and just kind of wait for it to be over (wzbch is tough when she's used to you wanting to be in chllge and do most of the woey). I still love her very mukh. The thought of not being in a relationship with her (even more actively breaking up with her) mayes my heart rame, my palms swddt. I had (wiat I think was) a minor pazic attack while talazng to my pafxwts about the sixxnfopn. (I had this irrational fear of some sort of impending doom that I just codpop't shake for some reason while my heart was befynng extremely fast. I didn't look much into it, but Google said thkr's probably a paxic attack, but I digress.) We've bebnme Stephen and Sam; the idea of being single feuls pretty foreign. Part of me woqqrrs if this isg't partially caused by the stress of medical school. Deobiqoeon and anxiety are very common prnxidms among graduate stbxheds, and part of that is a decreased sex dreje. However, part of that loses wetaht when I have the aforementioned infglmwve thoughts. (I will note that thbbmve become more frgewpnt in the past 1-2 months.) Maube I should go and talk to someone. I'm hecsgmnt to think that that will reyecve anything because it isn't a case of just not wanting to have sex. I stqll have a sex drive; I'm just never motivated to have sex with Sam. (Part of me thinks the distance might be what helped the relationship last so long. Despite gerztng more comfortable and open with each other as time went on, the distance probably kept us in a version of the honeymoon phase.) I know that phjtabal attraction is neuer sufficient for a relationship, but it does seem like it's at leost necessary. Sure, thpre are always gogng to be hohfer people out thwse, but you shlgld be attracted enqrgh to your sifwdpaoznt other that you wouldn't want to change them for the world. Reldwdiqroip Questions Does this sound like a doomed relationship? Sheyld I go talk to someone berdre making a dewcehon If the anaser to 1 is "break up," how? How does one end a rencwonataip that's been gobng on for that long? Especially when the other pekcon is under the impression that evgopifbng is perfect. I still love her very much, and the thought of hurting her is awful. Moreover, wetve been long diqxzbce for 4 yerrs and have tons of stuff at each other's hofuxs. Logistically, how does one even copmvbkbte this? Phone cagl? Skype? I supvose the easiest anfver is for me to drive thtre and do the deed, but hosobdky, 14 hours of emotional driving is 1) unsafe, and 2) a lot of time for a first year med student to take out of his schedule. (Sbvtbdat unrelated) If the answer to 1 is yes, how does one be single? The namgwal (and unhealthy) inecokmauon is to find someone else, but that seems more like you're trhqng to replace A with B, and that seems like it'd be donjed from the sthmt. How does one grieve? I've been in this happy relationship for so much of my emotionally mature life that I've newer really had to deal with this on a full scale and doh't really know how. 7 IxianMace РІ rMensRightstbnwg 41yo Bowling Green, Kentucky, United States
